First electric milk truck in the Netherlands drives for CONO Kaasmakers

CONO Kaasmakers and its milk transporter Danmel are pleased to announce the arrival of the very first all-electric Rijdende Melk Ontvangst (RMO) in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the RMO has travelled its first electric kilometers.

"We are proud of this innovative and sustainable RMO," said Wim Betten, general manager of CONO Kaasmakers. "As a cooperative, we are always looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment. With this RMO, together with our partner Danmel, we are taking an important step in our ambition toward a climate-positive cheese chain."

The electric RMO will initially be used to collect milk from cattle farmers in the region around the Beemster. Because the cheese factory is well equipped to deal with peak loads on the network, the vehicle will be charged overnight at the CONO cheese factory. Of course with green electricity, which is largely generated by our own dairy farmers.

The new electric RMO is built by Volvo and equipped with the latest technologies in sustainability and efficiency. In addition, the RMO combination consists of an innovative trailer equipped with a hybrid milk pump. Pumping the milk from the farm's milk tank to the tanker truck is therefore not done with a running engine, but entirely on electricity from this battery. Thus, in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality, the RMO also helps reduce noise pollution.

Meanwhile, Mart de Waard, owner of Danmel Transport, looks to the future with confidence. "As two companies with a strong focus on sustainability, it is a logical step to invest in innovative and environmentally friendly solutions. In a year we will evaluate the functioning of the truck, hopefully resulting in us ordering the second one."

Climate ambition CONO
CONO Kaasmakers is a small farmers' cooperative with a big ambition. Together we go for positive for future generations, doing everything we can to pass on our world in a positive way to the next generation. This requires cooperation in the chain. In milk transport, CONO wants to achieve a 75% CO₂ reduction together with its partners in order to reduce the footprint of cheese. CONO is also committed to CO₂ reduction on the farm with its dairy farmers. Remaining emissions are compensated. On their own member farmers' farms if possible, and further away if necessary. Read
here more about this ambition.
