Good pasture bird management by our livestock farmers
Rewarded by Caring Dairy
Our dairy farmers are working to protect meadow birds in a variety of ways, often in partnership with a local wildlife association or through lease agreements with management measures to protect the meadow birds. But our farmers are also rewarded through the Caring Dairy program when they make an extra effort to conserve meadow birds.
For breeding and newborn meadow birds
About half of our farmers actively participate in agricultural nature management. By having a rest period and delaying mowing, breeding and newborn meadow birds have time to grow up until they can (fly away) or flee. If there is also puddle/grass or a ditch with swampy water nearby, there are also extra insects so the young chicks can feed.
Important contribution
Good meadow bird management can involve livestock farmers taking measures such as clutch management, where nests are detected and protected during operations. Another important measure are the creation of wetland areas that provide food and rest, keeping rough grass strips as refuges, and adapting mowing techniques to minimize disturbance. With these efforts, our livestock farmers are making an important contribution to the conservation of meadow birds and biodiversity in their environment.
