CONO takes next step in sustainability with monofoil packaging and air out of the chain

Starting this week, CONO Kaasmakers is taking the next step in making its packaging and logistics more sustainable, in line with its ambition to be "positive for future generations. Earlier, the small farmer cooperative in the Beemster region had already made the use of ink and sealing stickers more sustainable. For the past year and a half, CONO has been working with packaging partner Hazeleger Kaas B.V. (Barneveld) and foil supplier MMF Transparant B.V. (Haarlem) on a more sustainable packaging solution for Beemster® cheese. The result: a more sustainable film while maintaining the premium quality of our Beemster® cheese.

From multifilm to monofilm: what's changing and why?

The new film for the self-service Beemster® cheese slices is a monofilm: the packaging thus consists of one type of material. This makes the foil easy and fully recyclable within existing recycling streams. Together with packaging design firm Now New Next, a critical look was also taken at how this step is already in line with European legislation, particularly the PPWR. For consumers, this means: the same freshness and easy opening, but with packaging that can be better recycled into new material after use.

Air from the chain

In addition to the film change, CONO is also tackling logistics. The new transport boxes consist of almost 75% recycled cardboard. By reducing the box height by almost 2 cm, an extra pallet layer is possible. Thus we take air out of the chain, use less material and this step delivers the following:

  • ± 8,000 kg less cardboard use per year
  • 26 fewer full trucks annually
  • less cold storage through more efficient stacking

With these interventions, CONO not only takes a step forward in efficiency, it also makes a significant contribution to reducing its ecological footprint. Sustainability and efficiency go hand in hand at CONO. This innovation shows that each step and making smart choices in packaging and logistics, can directly contribute to moving towards the future together in a sustainable way. That is why at CONO we are already working on the next step in making our packaging even more sustainable.
