About Cono

Facts and figures

The origins of CONO Cheesemakers

Various smaller dairy cooperatives were already operating in North Holland in the early 20th century. In 1947, three cheese cheese dairies in North Holland decided to work together: Concordia from Oudendijk, Ons Belang from Middelie and De Tijd from Beemster.

Together they created a cooperative called “The Combination.” Since 1990, CONO Cheesemakers has also joined forces with the CFM cooperative from Vechtstreek. This partnership enabled CONO Cheesemakers to produce cheese, butter, milk powder and whey powder at locations in Beemster, Ommen and Stompetoren. The factory in Ommen became independent under the name Hyproca Dairy in 1996. A legal merger in 1999 saw CONO Cheesemakers take over the Ommen de Vechtstreek cooperative.
The Vechtstreek members have been supplying the ice cream factory in Hellendoorn since 2008 for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream production in Europe.

Purveyor to the royal family

In June 2001, Her Royal Majesty the Queen granted CONO Cheesemakers the right to use the designation “purveyor to the royal household,” of which we are immensely proud. This honor is only bestowed on companies that are at least 100 years old and have an exceptional track record.

Our products

CONO has 460 dairy farmer members. We believe that hard-working farmers deserve fair compensation for their work. In addition to a fair price for their milk, CONO‘s farmers also get an extra premium for pasturing and joining our sustainability program. If you go for quality, you deserve quality.

Meet our livestock farmers

Sustainability

CONO livestock farmers produce 350 million kilograms of milk a year. This milk is processed into 28 million kilograms of cheese in the Beemsterpolder cheesemaking facility.
CONO’s cheeses are marketed as different types and brands. See also the page “our cheeses.” Beemster is the brand in which all of our values come together. For more information, please visit www.beemsterkaas.nl.

CONO Cheesemakers also sells sustainable milk to Ben & Jerry’s and Nestlé.

CONO Cheesemakers has a powder tower where whey (a byproduct of cheesemaking) is processed into whey powder. This powder is sold and used in various products, such as cattle feed.

Organizational structure

Since the Caring Dairy program was launched in the Netherlands by CONO in 2008, 90% of the CONO farmers have joined. The program focuses on sustainable dairy farming. This means that Beemster cheese is made from sustainably produced milk. A nice side note:Ben & Jerry's ice cream for the European market is made from milk produced by CONO dairy farmers! Members

As members, the 460 CONO livestock farmers are also owners of CONO Cheesemakers, and together they determine the course their cooperative should take. Twice a year, the farmers discuss policy during the general meetings. A board of directors and a supervisory board were elected from among members during the general meeting.

Directors & supervisory board members

The board of directors consists of nine livestock farmers from the cooperative who determine policy at CONO Cheesemakers.
The supervisory board consists of six livestock farmers and two external members. These supervisory board members monitor the board of directors’ policy and provide advice.

Managementteam

The management lead bij the CEO and COO is responsible for daily operations.

Youth council

The youth council consists of twelve livestock farmers below the age of 35. The youth council acts as a sounding board for the boards and is a place where young members with executive talent can gain experience.

Sounding board

The sounding board consists of twelve CONO livestock farmers and the manager of dairy farm affairs and transport, and the CONO sustainability manager. This committee safeguards the development of the policy for the dairy farm and CONO’s sustainability program. It acts as a sounding board for the two boards.

Cattle feed committee

The ration of food that cows receive has a major impact on their health and welfare and on the taste of our cheese. The feed committee critically monitors the quality of feed and new developments in cattle feed, as well as their potential impact on animal welfare and the taste of our cheese.
